HISP Humanity Innovation and Social Practice

Finding New Ways to Tackle Old Problems.

The Humanity Innovation and Social Practice (HISP) Project, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology since 2013, emphasizes on making humanity and social sciences an initiative to social change, leading to better living environments.

The HISP project has three objectives. First, it encourages universities to develop their distinguishing features by integrating academic research and social practice. Second, it aims to be the catalyst that urges academics and universities to take on social responsibilities. Third, it seeks to facilitate the reforms of academic evaluation and higher education accordingly.

There have been nine universities carrying out HISP projects in different regions of Taiwan. They form partnership with local communities and respond to local demands and problems together. The major issues include social innovation, social and solidarity economy, public participation, environmental sustainability, intergenerational cooperation, resilient community, transition town, ethnic relations and cultures.

Social Innovation Database

To provide academic service to HISP scholars, Taiwan’s researchers, and researchers from around the world in working on their research, the HISP website systematically collects numerous cases and related literature from around the globe that is related to the “social innovation” theme. The website also aims to provide further analyses and commentaries on cases and literature and update to the social innovation database. The database is open for public access so as to facilitate information exchanges, and thus streamline the processes for scholars or social actors to get hold of existing research results and practical experiences.

Journal of New Praxis

Journal of New Praxis is an electronic publication that strictly adheres to academic standards. It provides a brand new academic platform on which scholars who carry out their research through local and social praxis can publish their findings. It not only promotes academic exchanges and knowledge dissemination, but also provides an academic environment in Taiwan that can enhance the exchange between fundamental knowledge exploration and theoretical praxis.

The Journal calls for papers that cover any academic field as long as they are based on research on social praxis. Apart from welcoming general research papers, literature reviews, and book commentaries, the journal also encourages the submission of ethnographies with field observations and in-depth case studies collected in the praxis process. The HISP hopes that an in-depth dialogue between academic research and practical experience can help building a new knowledge paradigm in Taiwan based on a combination of theory and praxis. Then, we can further share models and experiences developed from local praxis with the rest of the world.
