2020 International Conference of New Praxis and Taiwan-Japan Alliance of Local Revitalization and Social Practice

Innovative Programs of University Social Practices and Local Well-Being

Introduction:

Due to the rise of global connections (or globalization), the expansion of neoliberalism, and the effect of the internet that blurred the boundaries of local communities, local issues that are interwoven into regional context require various actors to form interdisciplinary and cross-community cooperation and respond to local challenges together. This conference especially invites papers on the following topics, including how different actors respond to structural issues together by local engagement? How do they develop the proper model of collaborations embedded in local contexts during the process? How do they build and reflect the mechanism of team work and cooperation? How do they establish bilateral (or multilateral) communications between practices and theories when dealing with social issues, etc.? We look forward to having practical, theoretical, and reflective knowledge from various perspectives such as the government, universities, and civic groups and contributing fruitful discussions all together.

Taiwan and Japan have experienced similar social transformation and confronted similar social problems such as the lack of long-term care, the uneven development between rural and urban areas, the increasing gaps between the rich and the poor, the stagnation of economic development, the unemployment in rural areas, risk management and the prevention of disaster, and so on. They are derived from the changes in demography, unequal distribution of resources, the bottleneck of the industrial development, the degeneration of environment, and so on. These issues are deeply embedded in local contexts while the top-down investing policies are no longer enough to respond to them. Instead, different actors such as scholars, experts, NGOs and local officials are necessary to work with local communities and seek innovative and contextualized ways of solving local problems. Moreover, they put ideas into practice together and pave the way for further cooperation and alternative development.

Both the government of Taiwan and the government of Japan decided to build a university-based system for social innovation and regional rehabilitation by encouraging universities to form long-term and reciprocal partnerships with local communities. Being a key actor, how does the university apply their research, education and social responsibilities into the process of social practices? Meanwhile, they have to form the mechanism of facilitating interdisciplinary cooperation in problem-solving processes and they need to translate these practical experiences into academic knowledge. They are crucial foundation for action research. This conference encourages analyses from the interdisciplinary perspectives in studying the interactions between actions and research, and the possible solutions.
