Making Things Happen: Social Innovation And Design

In this article, the author explores the notion of social innovation as an emerging field of application for design. Three main types of social innovation processes are identified: top-down, which occurs when strong actors take the lead to promote social change; bottom-up, which occurs when social change emerges from grassroots activities; and hybrid, when a combination of top-down and bottom-up innovations take place concurrently. It is argued that promising cases of social and technological innovations are at the same time solutions to current problems and meaningful steps toward a sustainable society.
