IT Funding's Race with Obsolescence, Innovation, Diffusion, and Planning

General economic uncertainty and ongoing issues with information technology (IT) funding in higher education are impacting the general availability and allocation of funds to community colleges and, subsequently, to IT. However, financial support for IT is not always just about money: how much and to whom, from what source for what purpose. Other internal issues within community colleges are changing the way funds are justified, allocated, and accounted for. These issues may bring more dollars into the IT budget or may divert technology dollars into non-IT budgets. This chapter highlights four issues that are being discussed and resolved on community college campuses: (1) avoiding obsolescence; (2) supporting innovation; (3) addressing diffusion; and (4) allying with planning.
