Philanthrocapitalism: Solving Public Problems Through Private Means.

The article discusses the phenomenon of philanthrocapitalism, or the movement by entrepreneurial philanthropists andbusiness leaders to use business techniques to charitable giving and to alter the roles of businesses and governments in driving social and environmental progress. According to the author, philanthrocapitalism illustrates the development of a new form of social contract which will increase the ability of private actors to help solve public problems. It is suggested that successful philanthropy in the 21st century will require commitment from wealthy donors, partnership between the public and private sectors, adequate funding for social innovation, and increased candor about failure. Other topics include risk aversion, hyperagency, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
