Designing and Evaluating a Social Participation Course: "An Introduction to English Poetry" as an Example

This paper examines "An Introduction to English Poetry," an elective class designed as a social participation course at Ming Chi University of Technology. This class was structured as a response to the enhancement of University Social Responsibility in a small scale for non-English majors at this school. The researcher examined how an activity of delivering posters of English poetry to social welfare organizations (SWOs) nationwide helped to establish the relationship between students and the society, elevate students' awareness of their social roles, and inspire their sense of making social participation a sustainable action. The instructor guided each group of students to choose an English poem whose theme matched the mission of their chosen SWO, helped lead the class to contact their interested SWOs, and encouraged the students to use creativity in designing their posters tailored to particular SWOs. During the process, students drilled their teamwork and collaboration skills, developed critical thinking, and overcame the anxiety of communicating with the SWOs. This paper adopted a mixture of methods for research: quantitative data consisted of Students' Questionnaire Survey; qualitative data of Students' Contact Form with SWOs, Teacher's Track Form, and Students' Reflection Sheet. The above data was analyzed and discussed, and reflections and suggestions were made at the end of the paper.
