What Should University Do Regarding Social Responsibility: Educate, Practice, or Ambidextrous Approach?-A Research of USR in Taiwan

摘要:

University Social Responsibility (USR) is an emerging issue worldwide, but Taiwan's related efforts are mostly focused on promoting the local and micro-international "USR practice programs", while the research on the connotation and essence of USR education is slightly insufficient. This study firstly compares the implementation of USR in the European Union, North America (emphasizing the reform of university education itself), Japan and Taiwan (emphasizing the local-based revitalization program), and then attempts to explore the effects of the European and American practices, which accentuating the "education" as the essence of USR to examine the relationship between USR and CSR. Thus, provide us a more comprehensive and comparative view when practicing USR in Taiwan. This study used the "Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (BE&CSR)" course as a proxy representing USR education part to analyze whether the effect of the USR works in Taiwan's university? We conducted a questionnaire survey on EMBA students from a university in Northern Taiwan, and using DANP method by combining "Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) & Analytic Network Process (ANP)" to compare these two groups of respondents to testify whether the BE&CSR course can strengthen students' CSR consensus. The result of the research confirms that "the effect of BE&CSR education" does exist. Therefore, "business personnel taking relevant BE&CSR courses in universities" has a significant impact on enhancing ethical awareness and CSR strategies. This result can prove the legitimacy and rightness of the European and American USR's way of initiating from the essence of education. If this "educational USR program" can be integrated with the current "practical USR program" in Taiwan, we believe the overall effect of this ambidextrous approach should be more noteworthy.
