Issues in the Preservation of Traditional Cuisines: A Case Study in Northern Malaysia

As preservation of cultural heritage is crucial to any community and culture, this paper discusses the issues in preserving traditional cuisines in Malaysia. A study on the preservation of traditional Malay cuisines is being carried out in the states of the northern region in Malaysia. Our preliminary study identifies several major issues involved in order to preserve the traditional cuisines in these localities which include the lack of awareness to preserve and archive the traditional cuisines on the part of those who are directly involved in this business as well as the lack of promotion to make the products known to the public. In addition, the limited roles of various government agencies, the lack of continuity by the young generation to continue the tradition and the lack of new strategies and innovations in marketing the products contribute to the challenges in preserving the traditional cuisines. This paper discusses these issues in the context of small scales entrepreneurs who participate as a way to increase their income.
