Great Expectations: the English Heritage Approach to the Management of the Historic Environment in England's Wetlands

摘要:

Wetlands are a unique component of the historical environment, under severe threat from natural and human agencies. The archaeological resource contained in wetlands tells us about all aspects of the past much more vividly than equivalent dryland sites. This evidence is particularly fragile and vulnerable to change and we must make common cause with nature conservation interests to preserve and manage what survives for the benefit of present and future generations. English Heritage is committed to developing integrated strategies for the management of wetlands and this paper reviews our general approach to the management of the archaeological resource in this fragile and threatened environment.
