Sustainable livelihoods within global market places: rural Artisans in Thailand.

摘要:

Artisans, who combine crafts production and trade with domestic and subsistence activities, are reaching wider regional and global markets. Many community- based organizations are increasing the value of artisan activity by supporting the dignity and autonomy of artisans, continuity of indigenous knowledge and cultural diversity, and sustainability of local economies and communities. One such community development located in Pwo Karen, North Thailand is Sop Moei Arts. Funded by the Swedish International Developmental Agency, the project has evolved into a culturally specific income-generation scheme involving women and men who weave textiles and baskets using modified traditional techniques and designs. The project began in 1977 as a mobile health clinic, specializing in maternal and child health care. However, the story of Sop Moei Arts stands out for three reasons: successful integration of projects for health, education, agriculture and income generation; high quality of artisan products; and commitment to on-going learning and innovation. - See more at: http://www.popline.org/node/187397#sthash.U91S1oKJ.dpuf
