Governance and civic engagement: urban economies, poverty and civil society

摘要:

The aims of this research program were twofold: 1. to identify the factors accounting for relative success or failure in enabling the poor to benefit from urban economic growth, and 2. to examine how poor residents can and do influence the agenda of the various institutions of urban governance, and with what outcomes. These interconnected aims were broken down into a series of more specific research questions and addressed through a series of nine city case studies in the context of wider reviews of published material. The nine cities were Johannesburg, South Africa, Mombasa, Kenya, Kumasi, Ghana, Santiago, Chili, Ahmedabad, Vishakapatnam and Bangalore, India, Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Cebu City, Philippines.
