Winners and losers: ethnic minorities in sport and recreation.

摘要:

This book assesses the relative significance of ethnicity, culture, and gender in determining participation in sport by people from ethnic minority groups. Six ethnic groups resident in Greater Manchester were selected to take part in the research: Afro-Caribbean, Bangladeshi, Chinese, East African Asian, Indian and Pakistani. Some of the factors which it examines as having a bearing on participation in any kind of sporting or physical activity include: (1) those peculiar to people from ethnic minorities whose cultural traditions were different from those of the white majority; (2) those factors which people from ethnic minorities shared with their white peers, for example, age, gender, life cycle, class, socioeconomic status, social skills and self confidence; (3) racial and sexual discrimination by the providers of sporting and recreational facilities; (4) racial discrimination within society at large, to identify whether the perceptions of people from ethnic minorities about sporting and recreational facilities are affected by a sense of threat from the white majority; and (5) the possibility that relevant legislation such as Compulsory Competitive Tendering might have an impact on the intentions or practices of local authorities and significantly, access to ethnic minority groups. It rejects the hypothesis that ethnic minorities in general show less interest, enthusiasm and aptitude for sport and physical recreation than their caucasian counterparts and concludes that all those involved in the promotion of sport and recreation facilities in whatever context should recognize that ethnic minority groups are different and their differences need to be understood, respected and accepted.
