Balancing professional and community interests

The question of how to help the citizenry while maintaining a commitment to professional quality and integrity is addressed. The solution is to redefine and nurture the relationship with the community. This calls for a completely different set of skills from those typically included in preparation for a career in transportation. In many cases, people who drive the streets, use the bus or ride a bicycle every day probably have a much better user's understanding of problems along a given route. In a sense, this makes them informal experts. While it may appear to detract from the ability to perform basic tasks, transportation professionals must realize that what they do is a communications job as well as a technical, problem-solving job. Engaging in community dialogue gives the professional a chance to show his/her interest in the well-being of the entire community.
